Signs & Symptoms

Parkinson’s disease is a long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that mainly affects the motor system.

What Are the Early Symptoms of PD?

You may note tremors in hands, arms, legs, jaw, or head. At times, you might face muscle stiffness
where the muscle remains contracted for an extended period of time, slowness of movements, impaired balance and coordination, sometimes leading to falls. It is important to get in touch with someone as soon as you note any of these symptoms. Your physician should schedule or refer you to a neurologist for testing.

What We Offer

Counselling the Future
of Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson Movement | “Be an inspiration for other people with Parkinson’s such that they might say, because of you, I did not give up.” Frank C. Church.”

Physical Therapy is the Key.

Most everyone knows that exercise is beneficial to people with Parkinson’s disease. But physical

therapy, in particular, is key. Why? You can remain independent by gaining mobility, strength, and

balance with the help of a professional. In the brain, connections are formed and reorganized.

Neuroplasticity is the process by which the brain changes. Exercise may improve neuroplasticity, according to some research. It is possible to improve your ability to pay attention, think, and remember

through exercise. In addition, physical activities may benefit areas of the brain associated with learning.

This effect is more obvious in the early disease phases.

Parkinson Movement | PD’s

Parkinson’s disease (PD) does not have a standard treatment. Symptoms and treatments for

Parkinson’s vary from person to person. There are several treatments available, including medication

and surgery. Lifestyle changes, such as getting more rest and exercising, are other options.

There are many medications available at Parkinson’s Movement to treat Parkinson symptoms, but none have been shown to reverse the disease’s effects. For people with PD, it is common to take a variety of medications at various times during the day to manage symptoms. The ability to keep track of medications  can be a challenge, but keeping a schedule will allow you to get the most benefit from your

medications and prevent unpleasant “off” periods due to missed doses.

At Parkinson Movement, exercise is a planned, structured, regular physical activity. It is complementary to medications, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.

Maureen McCord and Parkinson Movement:

The desires for Maureen are to encourage and help people improve their mobility, but are unsure how to safely do so. Allowing them to achieve their own personal potential in movement, Maureen supports and coaches those in her care to move as functionally as possible. This is done through the Parkinson

Movement website. She offers individualized training specifically tailored to your needs and limitations. This is accomplished online via zoom.  Once your program is created with Maureen, you will have access to the recording where you can practice and repeat it daily for 30 days.  You can avail the program anytime during those 30 days, making it convenient to access the recording during your “on” times so that you may maintain your independence.  Once those 30 days are up, the option to continue with a newly designed program is offered.  This is so you can vary the structure of the motions and strength in order to continue moving to the best of your ability.

The mainstay of your diet should be targeted nutrition in order to stay as healthy as possible with  Parkinson’s disease (PD). Diets based on whole foods and plants have many health benefits.

The benefits of a diet that includes whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and protein-rich foods are not specific to PD.  These foods or food groups should be added to your diet:  greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries, nuts, and seeds.

Fad diets should be avoided.  In order to get enough energy, protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, it is necessary to eat a variety of foods.

In addition to optimizing medication, maintaining bone strength, fighting constipation, losing weight, and maintaining overall health, we help with eating the right foods and will also help you stay fit and healthy.

It is possible for diet and Parkinson’s medications to interact. An empty stomach is the best time to take carbidopa/levodopa medications. These medications, however, may cause nausea in some people, and they shouldn’t be taken on an empty stomach. Therefore, it is important to get in touch with your doctor regarding your medication regimen.

A protein-rich meal, like fish or meat, eggs, dairy products, nuts, or beans, may interfere with the absorption of certain PD medications, making them less effective or more slowly absorbed. Your doctor can advise you on whether to take the drug on an empty stomach or with a small snack, such as crackers or applesauce

Having to take medication for control of your body was not in the cards for you. Maybe you're stunned, surprised, angry, or even secretly suspected it might happen. What Our Clients
Say about Us

Testimonial
Maureen has been my mom's personal trainer for several years now. We first met Maureen at the Dunwoody Baptist Gym and were very happy with the progress my mom made while working with her. Once COVID hit, we realized we were not comfortable taking my mom to the gym, so we asked Maureen if she would be willing to come to our home. That was in early 2020, and we have never been happier that we made that decision. My mom just turned 90 and is still able to move around without a walker, take walks, get herself in and out of her tub every night, and dress. Maureen's workouts are a perfect combination of strength training, balance, and memory. We absolutely credit Maureen with helping ensure that my mom stays physically and mentally strong and is very likely a key reason why she is still healthy and happy at 90!” Testimonial
